Sports Gallery

As a photojournalist in the 70's, I shot lots and lots of sports. Unlike other
sports photographers in my area, I was the only one shooting available light
at night football games. By not relying on strobe lights, I could shoot images
anywhere on the field and didn't have to wait for the action to come to me.
Also, flash shots eliminate details in the background and the slower sync
speeds of 35mm shutters caused some blurring; neither was acceptable.

Using a Nikon F 35mm SLR camera, I experimented with high speed films
and finally settled on recording film, very specialized at the time. That was
necessary because stadium lights in those days were not nearly as bright
as what's common today.
"Pushing" the film during developing to attain the
speed I needed did create grain (known as "noise" today) but the images
were sharp and reproduced well in the newspapers.
