B-1 Rollout, October 26, 1974
This event was huge for Rockwell, the Air Force and the Antelope Valley.
The day before the rollout the aircraft was parked outside but draped to shield
it from view by passing motorists; Rockwell didn't want it seen or photographed
before the official unveiling. I asked local pilot and flight school owner Bill
Barnes to fly me just outside the restricted area of Plant 42 and got a
great shot of the B-1 from a few hundred feet in the air. It was too late
to get that shot in the local newspaper but it did go out on the wire service.
Joe Davies, then one of the head Rockwell guys, was not amused and he let
me know it at the Rollout the next day!
Unfortunately I long ago discarded all of my negatives from that era but recently
discovered the contact sheet below from the day of the rollout, which does not
contain the aerial shot. The badge to the left was my security clearance
and I have always made sure to keep it as a memento.
